Funded by the Federal Government as a part of a new initiative to upgrade medical education facilities in the private hospital sector, the clinical school at Greenslopes Private Hospital integrated the two different cultures of the University and Ramsay Health Care.
Inserting the school in an operating hospital was a complex procedure. Our solution was to carry out a range of small projects throughout the campus to improve the utilisation of spaces and gain additional functionality for both groups. This approach created a high degree of excitement from both groups and great interest from the Federal Government on this integrated model of medical learning facilities.
Our vision was to create a calm space that provided a retreat from clinical activity for staff and students within the hospital. This was realised through a calming palette of materials including warm timbers and tactile finishes to complement the spaces in their various functions. Acoustic ceilings were a design feature that enabled spaces to be peaceful and quiet. The seminar and conference rooms utilise custom acoustic panelling which provides controlled absorption and diffusion and allows for high speech intelligibility without amplification throughout the surrounding areas.
Today, the project has become a learning and conference centre for the Clinical School as well as all levels of staff within the hospital. It has created an informal and formal learning heart of the campus with multi use collaborative learning areas, high-tech real time operating theatre presentations and video conferencing capabilities.
