The 676 bed Greenslopes Private Hospital (GPH) is the flagship hospital for Ramsay Health Care. It is a tertiary level teaching hospital and Phillips Smith Conwell has been the health planner and architect for this campus for almost 20 years. During this time, we have designed and managed over 19 projects on the site including:

  • Master planning
  • Over 200 new inpatient beds
  • Expansion of 12 operating theatres in two stages to create a suite of 19
  • Innovative new day Surgery facility
  • Day oncology centre with 32 chairs
  • A new maternity service
  • Outpatient Centre
  • An integrated medical educational facility for the University of Queensland in conjunction with GPH
  • Cardiac facility with 3 cardiac catheter labs and Coronary care unit
  • Multi level car park
  • Sleep studies unit
  • Medical Suites
  • Commercial kitchen upgrade
  • Loading dock and Stores upgrade
  • QXR Imaging tenancy including MRI, nuclear medicine and PET
  • ROC radiation therapy centre
  • Expansion of the GE unit and recovery areas
  • Central Steralising Department upgrade
  • Obstetrics Theatre

All stages were facilitated by two master planning processes, both with a ten year outlook.  Each intervention incorporated a process of first principles analysis and continuous improvement at every stage. As a result, the facility has become a very efficient, patient focussed hospital that has introduced many innovations into health care.

Since 2013, we have expanded the existing number of operating theatres at GPH to a total of 18. Forward planning by our design team meant the infrastructure was already in place when the hospital needed to expand their theatre service.

Working closely with the hospital in understanding patient flow, clinical requirements and clinician treating processes has allowed us to insert and expand their health care services with minimum impact to the hospital.

Currently, we are working on the expansion of GPH’s emergency department, including a new ambulance bay, additional treatment bays, new consult rooms and plaster rooms. In addition to this, we are expanding their intensive care unit, theatres and creating an additional ward.
