St Michael’s Early Learning Centre was established to provide an extension to the existing junior school – St Michael’s College.

They required spaces that were flexible and suitable for both child care as well as out of school hours care for up to 100 children. The planning allows for multiple uses throughout the day and provides a creative environment for learning at all stages of childhood.

The external shell recalls elements of the local coastal building vernacular and uses simple materials and environmentally sympathetic finishes. Internally, spaces feature skylights that emulate the shape of a wave, bringing an abundance of natural light and representing elements of the surrounding coastal vernacular. Timber provides warmth to this area of the building which acts as a link between rooms and provides an additional learning space for the children.
