This project consisted primarily of the fitout of an existing shell floor as a new 19-bed rehabilitation ward. While the basic principle for the design of the ward layout was following two previously completed rehab ward levels, the project provided the opportunity for Phillips Smith Conwell to further develop the detailed design for bedrooms, ensuites and the staff base areas. Some changes were also required to the existing rehabilitation gymnasium.
The main challenge for the design of the ward was that the floor-to-floor height in the existing building was extremely tight at 2950mm. This meant that a clever use of ceiling bulkheads and a high level of services coordination was required throughout.
