New Farm Clinic is an accredited specialist mental health facility located in inner city Brisbane. The Clinic is affiliated with the University of Queensland and offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and day patient programs that specialise in the treatment of mood disorders, eating disorders, psychogeriatrics and general acute psychiatry.

The clinic required the expansion and refurbishment of their existing facility to accommodate the Private Health Unit Regulator prerequisites for separate entry points for outpatient consulting areas and day programs, independent of the main hospital.

The expansion addressed the need for more extensive inpatient facilities, providing an additional two inpatient units with 27 beds in each, as well as the conversion of existing four bed wards to single bed accommodation.

The project involved an extended development approval period working with neighbouring residents to achieve a sympathetic building form fronting Sargent Street and Mountford Road. In addition to this, a key feature of the design was maximising the amount of natural light in the internal spaces while maintaining sightlines to the external environment in all rooms. Large screened windows were incorporated into the façade to the street as well as to internal landscaped courtyards.

The project also incorporated a central lift carefully located to resolve access issues present in the existing hospital and to also provide access to all levels of the new hospital.

The existing hospital remained operational throughout the duration of the works, with a temporary kitchen provided during construction.
