Phillips Smith Conwell in association with BPSM Architects were engaged as Architect in the redevelopment of the Risdon Prison site in Hobart including a new Men’s Prison (220 prisoners), an expanded Women’s Prison (45 prisoners) and a new Secure Mental Health Unit (35 patients).
The project was undertaken with a client who had not built a new correctional centre in over 50 years. Therefore, Phillips Smith Conwell’s brief was to design from first principals, where the whole of the design was created specifically for the client. Every part of the centre was a new approach responding directly to the clients evolving brief.
