Phillips Smith Conwell was engaged as Architect and lead consultant for 154 bed new Women’s Correctional Centre. The consultant team was novated to Baulderstone Hornibrook as managing contractors at the completion of the Design Development Phase.
The new facility is co-located with the existing Townsville Men’s Correctional Centre and shares the visitor processing and car park facilities. As a self-contained centre, the Townsville Women’s Correctional Centre responds specifically to the needs of women and mothers. This resulted in smaller unit sizes, more open recreational space (including a “town centre”) and less obvious security.
The final project was completed with 64 beds secure and 90 bed residential Correctional Centre with a full range of facilities for a self-contained centre.
Innovations included the provision of mother’s units, crèche facilities and enhanced mental health facilities within a crisis support unit.
