The new West End Police Station sits in a prominent position on Vulture Street, adjacent to the newly extended Primary School and central to the West End community.
The new station was designed and documented on the site of the previous station, which was demolished as part of a wider master plan of Government owned land. It was important that the facility provide greater transparency and public interface for the community, while also considering operational activities and sensitivities of the neighbouring buildings. It provides a facility which meets the current policing needs while also allowing for future flexibility.
The main entry engages with Vulture Street through landscaping, integrated seating, and a sheltered outdoor area while providing a safe environment with hostile mitigation measures. The design provides a greater street presence on Vulture Street and an open, civic presence within the wider West End context.
Perforated metal screening with the ‘Look to the Stars’ motif, and coloured aluminium batten screening positioned along the western façade of the facility, shelters from the western sun and provides an engaging outlook to the adjacent West End State School.
